ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity. It can significantly impact a person's daily life, relationships, and academic or professional performance.

Diagnosing ADHD

  • Symptoms: ADHD is diagnosed after a person has shown some or all of the symptoms on a regular basis for more than six months, in more than one setting.
  • Childhood symptoms: Inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity are common symptoms in children.
  • Adult symptoms: In addition to inattention and impulsivity, adults with ADHD may experience chronic lateness, forgetfulness, anxiety, poor organizational skills, low self-esteem, employment problems, short temper, difficulty finishing tasks, and restlessness.
  • Medical evaluation: A complete medical history will screen for other conditions that may affect behavior, such as recent major life changes, undetected seizures, thyroid problems, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, and lead toxicity.
